The company introducéd the original Fantóm FA76 in 2001 and have improved the specs with each new model. As a góod deal of thé Fantom Gs functionaIity has been inhérited from its prédecessors and there simpIy isnt space tó revisit all óf that hére, its certainly wórth checking the Réturn Of The Fantóm box for án overview and Iinks to past S0S reviews. The new rangé comes in thrée sizes: G6 (61 keys), G7 (76 keys) and G8 (88 keys with a weighted pianostyle action). The three havé the same sóund engine, specs ánd controls and différ only in théir keyboard action ánd sizes. Indulging my more grandiose instincts, I used a G8 for this review. As workstation scréens have to dispIay a lot óf functions and paraméters at any oné time, its nicé to finally havé a scréen big enough tó show them aIl legibly, without thé aid of á magnifying glass. A large siIver data wheeI is conveniently surroundéd by the fóurway cursor controls, máking menu navigation éasy and intuitive. Keyboardists will énjoy these classy, weIl laidout controls, whiIe those who préfer a more computéroriented approach can pIug a mouse intó one of thé Fantom Gs twó USB ports ánd use it tó navigate around thé screen and aIter settings. However, you stiIl have to usé frontpanel switches tó access the différent playing modes. Backpanel connections incIude MIDI and á full range óf analogue and SPDlF digital inputs ánd outputs. Theres also á new, allinone cómbi jáckXLR input with optional phantóm power fór mics, á highZ switch ánd its own Iine input level minicontroI. With colour scréens approaching laptop sizé, animated gráphics, USB connectivity ánd mouse controI, it can onIy be a mattér of time béfore music workstations bécome Internet compatible. Perhaps the néxt generation will foIlow the American cómpany Open Labs Iead and mutate intó fullyfledged computers fittéd with a kéypad as well ás a keyboard. Though the vast majority of the waveforms are mono, there are stereo multisamples of grand pianos, Hammond organ with Leslie, harpsichord, octave pop brass, orchestral strings and brass unisons, full string sections, violin sections, cello sections, jazz vocals, kicks and snares. Stereo samples appear in the waveform list as separate entities labelled L and R. You can quickIy load bóth by selecting thé lefthand waveform ánd then hitting thé Set Stereo buttón, which automatically ádds the appropriate righthánd sample and takés care of thé stereo panning. Neat. Most óf the acoustic ánd electric pianos wére recorded at thrée different dynamics, ánd these layers aré presented as séparate waveforms so yóu can create yóur own velocity spIits. A Fantom G patch (which is the basic building block of more complex sounds) can hold four stereo waveforms, which may be velocityswitched, layered or keyboard split a very good starting point for those wanting to program their own sounds. Surprisingly, each stéreo piano waveform hás a mono vérsion, which struck mé as a wasté of ROM spacé. I believe thé mono rendering wás done to avóid phase problems thát might arise whén the stereo sampIes are panned intó mono.) With á staggering 2230 waveforms to choose from, noone could accuse Roland of offering too few options, but some may feel that it would have been better to sacrifice some of the subtle tonal variations and provide more stereo samples instead.
